I have been using hard tipped sculpting tools to crate parts and effects on Warhammer scale figures for a couple of years. I am looking to move to a much larger scale and I am looking for soft tipped tools so that I can make smoother surfaces than I can with hard tipped tools.

The prices seem to range from less than $1 on Aliexpress to $20 in a hobby store.

For a hobbyist who will not be selling models, where in this range should I set my budget. I will only be using it for a couple of hours a week.

Is a cheap tool a false economy, or an expensive one overkill.

I cannot give you a definite answer, but in my personal experience there's a noticable difference between the very cheap and middle priced products. They may look the same on the Aliexpress or Amazon website, but most of the time their properties and quality are quite different. Using a tool "for a couple of hours a week" warrants going for at least the middle price range in my oppinion. I made this experience with paint brushes, of which you can get 5 for 1 € or one good one for 3€. I never went back to the cheap ones after buying my first "expensive" one.
